Mondaine watches' design are inspired from the simple face of the Official Swiss Railway Clocks. In 1940s, Hans Hilfiker, a Swiss Engineer and Designer and employee of the Federal Swiss Railways, was asked to come up with a highly visible clock that would not only form the basis of their later corporate identity, but would also help to guarantee on time departures as well.

Determined to find a more reliable timepiece than electrically powered clocks, Hilfiker created a timepiece that comes up to the 12 o'clock position after just 58 seconds: It then awaits release from an automatic electrical impulse, which is sent at every full minute. When the black minute hand jumps to the next position, the red second hand then begins a new rotation ensuring synchronization of every clock in the Swiss rail system.

Zurich watchmaker Mondaine has incorporated this highly individual motion within its Official Swiss Railway SBB Watch. The fascinating execution “Stop to Go”, like on the original clock, features the famous red second hand that turns full circle in 58 seconds and then waits at 12 o’clock for the black minute hand to move on before starting its next rotation.
