It might surprise you to learn that a great many Vintage Montblanc pens utilized Ebonite, a vulcanized class of rubber, quite a bit throughout their early pen designs. Today you can still find Ebonite rubber in some Montblanc productions, but new technology and materials have definitely lessened how often you’ll see it. If we take a look at Pirelli – it’s obvious that rubber isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
This Great Masters pen celebrates Pirelli and 150 years of excellence in crafting tires. The “Sgorbiatori” of Pirelli, who hand-carve tire patterns to produce prototype treads and wheels, are truly masters of their craft. This work requires an enormous level of precision, practice, and talent. It’s clear that the master engineers and technicians at Pirelli have taken this craft to new heights, being the only supplier for the Formula One World Championships, as well as the World Superbike Championships among many other professional racing events.
This Great Masters Pirelli 1872 (for the Year Pirelli was first founded) is a limited edition pen with only 1,872 pieces crafted, using the general design of Montblanc’s most popular model, the Meisterstuck 149. Both the cap and barrel of this pen feature a rubber overlay engraved with a unique Pirelli pattern, inspired by a particular graphic treatment of Pirelli’s logo dating back to 1966. The matte rubber is accented beautifully by shining Ruthenium-coatings, and thin rings colored Pirelli Red at the top and bottom of the pen echo both Pirelli and Montblanc’s longstanding affiliation with the colors black & red.
At the top of the cap the Montblanc logo is represented in Mother of Pearl, a very unique addition that you won’t find on most Montblanc pens, making this highly sought-after by Montblanc collectors. On the 18k Gold, ruthenium-coated nib of the pen you’ll find Pirelli’s iconic P logo, along with a tire, carefully engraved into the master-crafted nib.
Montblanc continues to honor the most masterful creators, and Pirelli has certainly earned their spot with accolades and excellence spanning multiple centuries.
