About The Author
Victor Hugo started his career as a writer at a young age and was, simply put, a literary genius. His first published collection of poetry was released when he was only 20 years old and earned him a royal pension from the King of France at the time, Louis XVIII. Victor Hugo truly committed his life to his craft, eventually producing generation-spanning works such as Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame that remain impactful and heavily praised to this day.
Victor Hugo’s works have been adapted for film and theater dozens of times, including as a lovable cartoon accessible to children in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His works helped to shape French romanticism and the art of literature was forever changed by his touch. The Hunchback of Notre Dame ignited the historical preservation movement in France and brought huge popularity to Gothic revival architecture. Even the Notre Dame Cathedral itself provides that most of its present-day appearance was brought about by the success of this one piece of literature. Nearby, at France’s Panthéon Monument, Victor Hugo is honored by Interment alongside France’s greatest and most influential revolutionaries, government officials, scientists and artists.
About The Pen
This very special limited edition Montblanc pen is yet another piece of art to draw inspiration from Hugo’s works; in particular the design of this pen celebrates the release of Notre Dame De Paris or The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1831.
With only 1,831 models ever released, every bit of this pen celebrates Notre Dame Cathedral and Victor Hugo’s timeless work. Gothic arches across the cap and barrel ring true with the designs of the cathedral. The rosette found on the cap represents the rose window of Notre-Dame, while the clapper of the bell found at the end of the clip signifies Quasimodo the bell-ringer and the significance of the bell in the story. On the cap you’ll find a trefoil frieze, which is a design of 3 intersecting circles that is part of the architecture of Notre Dame and very popular in the gothic architecture so often associated with The Hunchback.
Along the bottom of the pen you can find a single chain link, that is meant to signify the posts in which Quasimodo was chained to. You will also find yellow lacquer along the bottom of the pen that represents the yellow prisoner's passport provided to Jean Valjean. Along the cap you’ll find a line from Les Contemplations meant to symbolize redemption: “Chaque homme dans sa nuit s’en va vers sa lumière.” Loosely translated, “Every man in his night goes to his light.”
A true gift from Montblanc to the world, this exquisitely designed and intricately accented pen perfectly personifies Victor Hugo’s impact on culture while celebrating some of the strongest visual elements to his famed Hunchback of Notre Dame. A perfect gift for fans of this timeless story, and a truly inspiring tool for any young writer-to-be. Limited quantities available.
