While the case looks similar to the flagship Panerai Luminor models at first glance, the case of this 1950 Luminor Submersible Flyback features many subtle differences when compared to its Luminor counterpart. This general cushion-shaped case design was first used for the Panerai 6152/1 that was manufactured throughout the 1950s for the Italian Royal Navy, but this model was first tested in the new age of Panerai in 2002 in the form of the PAM 127, also known as the “Fiddy” by Paneristi, or Panerai enthusiasts.
Rather than a screw-in crown that you might find on many modern dive watches, the Luminor utilizes a small lever that pushes the crown into the case, creating a watertight seal when closed. This mechanism is present on all Luminor models, but you will immediately notice larger lugs and a highly domed crystal for a vintage look on this 1950 edition. The middle-case is also U-shaped, adhering more closely to the original Luminors made for the Italian Navy in the 1950s. The back of the case features an etching of the slow-moving manned-torpedoes of World War 2 in which this design of Panerai was first employed.
This professional diver’s watch features a 30 bar (300 meter) water resistance. The in-house Panerai movement, the Caliber P.9100 boasts 3 days (72 hours) of power reserve. This is the first Chronograph automatic movement produced entirely in-house by Panerai. The robust 47mm titanium case is very light as well as hypoallergenic, and its large size adheres to the style of vintage diver watches. The vulcanized rubber watchband is perfect for a serious diver, but the box also includes a replacement Panerai leather band for dress attire. Flyback functionality allows you to send the chronograph hand back to its starting position instantly with one push of a button. The heavy-duty bezel allows quick and accurate dive timing. The watch also boasts very high magnetic resistance; over ten times what would be required for a dive watch of this caliber.
